Overview

The DataXchange Service (DX Service) is the communication point between machines and the web server.

If you are not an Administrator or are unsure, STOP. The DX Service typically only needs to be installed once at the beginning of the implementation, so if your account is already set up and collecting data, this was probably already done.

If you just want to view data already stored within DataXchange, use Data Display in a web browser or Mobile App. For more detailed configuration options use the Windows Client Application.

This service must be installed on a 64-bit Windows PC that is able to communicate to both the machines over a local network and the Internet, if using the Cloud. If you have machines on separate networks or in multiple plants, you will probably need to install the service in multiple places to communicate with every machine.

To download the service, go to https://scytec.com/dxserviceinstall. Run the installer when the download completes. The license agreement will be shown. To continue, you must accept the license agreement by going to the Options screen and checking the box I agree to the license terms and conditions. Additional options are as follows:

  • Install Location: The file folder where the DataXchange Service and DataXchange Update Service will be installed.
  • Start Services: This determines whether the services will be started during installation. If an issue is preventing the services from starting, uncheck this box to complete the installation.
  • SSL: Controls whether HTTP or HTTPS is used when the DX Service connects to the server. If unsure, leave this checked.
  • URL: The server URL the DX Service will connect to. If using the Cloud then the default of dx.scytec.com should be used.  If using On Premise then enter your DataXchange server URL here.
  • Account Number: The account number as provided by Scytec or your Reseller.
  • Account Password: The account password as provided by Scytec or your Reseller.
  • HTTP Port: The port on which the DX Service will listen for connections. The installer will open this port on the built-in Windows Firewall. If any other firewalls control local network access to this PC, the port must be opened there as well.
  • DCI Port: The port on which the DX Service will listen for DCI Communication. The installer will open this port on the built-in Windows Firewall. If any other firewalls control local network access to this PC, the port must be opened there as well.

Once installed the service is ready to go. If an Account Number and Password were provided while installing the service, the service will automatically connect to the server when installation completes. It will also be added automatically to the list under Manage → DX Service.
